Schools should use films, computers and games instead of books. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is suggested that schools should replace traditional books with modern teaching tools such as films, computers, and games. While digital media can enhance the learning experience, I believe it should complement rather than replace traditional textbooks.

One of the main criticisms of using digital media over traditional books is the risk of over-reliance on technology. While films, games and computers can be excellent supplementary tools, depending solely on these mediums can lead to superficial understanding of complex subjects. However, textbooks often contain well-researched, structured content that builds knowledge progressively, whereas digital mediums focus on fragmented and oversimplified concepts of ease of consumption. Moreover, excessive screen time has been linked to issues such as attention span reduction, digital fatigue, and negative health implications like eye strain. The overuse of technology disconnects students from traditional learning habits, such as note-taking and memorization – still essential aspects in many academic fields.

Although the advent of technology promises accessibility, there is still a significant divide in digital equity. Not all students nor teachers have a high-speed internet connection, personal computers, and even reliable electricity in many underdeveloped regions. On the other hand, textbooks can be distributed and shared with ease, while technology-based solutions require expensive devices, stable connection, potentially widening the gap between privileged and underprivileged students. Furthermore, technological issues, including software malfunction or outdated hardware, can cause frustration for both students and teachers.

Access to digital mediums may also pose a risk of distraction. As the modern world becomes increasingly digitized, non-educational content, such as social media, videos, and online games, can be tempting for students, making it harder to maintain focus on academic assignments. This is perhaps concerning for students, who may find it challenging to differentiate between educational content and entertainment. In contrast, books provide single focused source of information, helping students to concentrate only on the subject without the lure of unrelated distraction.

To sum up, while I acknowledge the importance of implementing interactive learning methods in schools, completely abandoning traditional books would be detrimental. The age-old format of textbooks remains valuable for developing deep cognitive skills, fostering independent learning, and in-depth knowledge.
