TASK 1: The chart below gives information about European people of different age groups who went to gyms once a month or more between 1990 and 2010.
The line graph shows the proportion of people who visited the gyms one or more in Europe from 1990 to 2010. Four different age groups are illustrated in the chart.
Overall, all age groups experienced considerable upward trends in the proportion of people who trained in the gym at least once a month. Additionally, the most notable change was seen in the youngest age group.
Focusing on younger age categories first, in 1990, around a tenth of 18-24-year-olds hit the gym on a monthly basis. The figure, then, had increased considerably by the end of the period to reach 50% in 2010. Similarly, the share of the second youngest age group (25-34) comprised less than 10% at the start of the period, after which, the proportion of gym-goers increased dramatically, overtaking the youngest age group in 1998. The figure reached its peak in 2006 at approximately 60%, after which it fluctuated between 50 and 60 during the last four years.
The increasing trend can also be seen in the remaining age groups, the middle-aged Europeans who visited the gym at least once a month witnessed an eight-fold increase from 5% in 1990 to 40% at the end of the period. Finally, only 3% of those aged 45+ attended the gym in 1990.Toward the end of the timeframe, the percentage 45+ year-olds who went to the gym was 20%.
