In an era characterized by breakthroughs in technology, there has been a considerable debate, with some claiming that traditional newspapers are the most effective way to receive news and others arguing that people can get news through other sources, particularly in prosperous countries. While both sides present valid arguments, I side with those who claim that other digital outlets are relatively efficient compared to physical newspapers.
Critics of contemporary media sources cite various reasons to support their stance. The main one relates to gaining knowledge and improving essential intellectual skills. If individuals regularly engage with newspapers from world-renowned and prestigious publications like The Economist, MIT Technology Review, and National Geographic, they gain access to reliable and well-substantiated information, which not only leads to a better understanding of complex issues, such as global economic trends, technological advancements, and environmental challenges but also enhances critical thinking. As a result, people may broaden their horizons and make informed decisions, thus improving their ability to navigate crucial topics, including climate change, politics, economics, scientific innovations, and medicine.
Despite these arguments, in my view, alternative news platforms carry greater weight. Thanks to the pervasiveness of the internet, humans now have access to the latest global news on various digital media platforms, such as BBC News, CNN, X (formerly known as Twitter), and Google News. Such non-traditional outlets also help them eradicate geographical barriers to information, which allows individuals in remote areas to stay abreast about current affairs both globally and locally. As a consequence of utilizing these alternative news platforms, people in rural areas have equivalent access to news as those in urban centers, thereby fostering a more connected society. In a world where people already have many issues due to a plethora of information, modern channels can make a big difference when it comes to following news feeds.
In summary, although some argue that classic newsprint is the optimal way to keep up with current events in light of fostering knowledge and enhancing intellectual capacities, I remain convinced that they still pale in comparison to the major upside of digital media regarding narrowing the information discrepancy.
