The given bar graph provides data on the percentage of families who owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales over almost a century, from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, it is evident that the number of households in rental accommodation experienced a significant fall, while the reverse trend happened with households in owned houses.
In 1918, just under 80 percent of families lived in rental flats, whereas over 20 percent of them had their own houses. Until 1939, the percentage of homeowners reached approximately a third and remained unchanged by 1953. Similar changes took place with households in rented accommodation, that is, it declined by almost 10% in 1939 and saw no change by 1953. In 1961, the percentages of families owning a house and renting a flat were over 40% and below 60% respectively. Notably, after ten years the percentages became equal.
After 1971, the percentage of homeowners increased by 10% each decade until 1991, while the reverse happened to families rented an apartment. Interestingly, both figures did not undergo huge changes until 2001. Finally, during the last decade, the percentage of households rented accommodation increased to 35 percent, although the one of house owners decreased to 65%.
