The chart exhibits how much carbon dioxide emitted per person from 1967 to 2007. Overall, the amount of carbon dioxide released in the United Kingdom declined in given years while the reverse was true for Italy and Portugal. Additionally, despite the increase at the beginning of the period, the decline was the case with Sweden too.
Focusing on the increases first, starting at around 1 metric ton in 1967, the output of carbon dioxide by an individual in Portugal increased to 2 metric tons by 1977. The constant rise continued till 1997 after which the rate slowed down reaching its peak around 5 metric tons in 2007. Italy underwent almost the same pattern. The figure for Italy in 1967 was a little over 4 metric tons and this was followed by a considerable growth to about 6.2 metric tons in 1977. After a slight improvement by 1997, the figure for Italy leveled off at almost 8 metric tons.
In contrast, people in United Kingdom emitted 11 metric tons of carbon dioxide in 1967 after which the amount was reduced steadily going down approximately to 10 and to 9 metric tons in 1987 and 2007 respectively. Moreover, Sweden with about 9 metric tons per capita was the second largest emitter in 1967. After going up dramatically in 1977, consistent reduction was observed in Sweden, first falling to 7metric tons in 1987 and 6 metric tons in 1997. Lastly, in 2007 the carbon emission in Sweden constituted less than 6 metric tons.
