Overall, the export patterns of the three countries varied significantly, with Colombia experiencing a sharp rise and then a dramatic decline in clothing exports at the end of the period, while Japan exhibited a steady downward trend. Myanmar, on the other hand, saw an initial rapid increase followed by a marked decline.
In 1990, Japan had the highest clothing expert value at around $600 million, followed closely by Colombia with just under $500 million. In stark contrast, Myanmar’s exports were insignificant, standing at close to $0. Over the following 10 years, however, Myanmar’s clothing exports grew in significance, surpassing both Colombia and Japan to reach nearly $800 million. At the same time, Japan’s exports declined modestly to around $530 million. Colombia, though ranking second, showed marked growth, with its export value rising by approximately $50 million.
Between 2011 and 2013, Myanmar’s income-generating export declined dramatically. Having been peaked at roughly $950 million in 2011, its clothing exports witnessed a dip, before staging a recovery to little over $400 million in the final year. Conversely, Japan bucked the foregoing trend, maintaining a steady decrease throughout the five years, finally rounding off the list with just under $500 million in 2013. Meanwhile, Colombia exhibited a further increase, reaching its highest export value of about $700 million, prior to a sharp drop by $100 million in 2013.
