Handwriting is less favored nowadays. Many people disprefer writing by hand using a pen or pencil. This essay will explore the main reasons behind this issue and explain the aspects of negative development.
One of the primary reasons people opt for typing is the advancements in technology. Widespread use of computers, tablets and smartphones for communication, work and education cause people to type on these gadgets. Unlike hand writing, typing is more convenient and faster way to chat with friends or colleagues. For example, in many schools or universities students choose to type on tablets to take notes of lectures instead of manual writing. As a result, students become to write by hand less than normal, leading to forgetting handwriting skills. Another contributing factor is the professional environment. In this modern time, many jobs require digital document rather than handwritten one. Companies want employees to work on laptop or computer using special programs, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Yet this requirement can be overwhelming for some, because some people are not used to working digitally.
In my humble opinion, negative aspects of manual writing outweigh the positive ones. First, cognitive impact of writing can be decreased. Some studies show that handwriting improves memory retention and learning, but because of increase in digital writing, more people cannot improve these skills with typing, particularly children, whom these skills are essential. Second, typed writing can also lead to technology dependence as more and more people lean toward gadgets because of their convenience. However, over-reliance on devices makes people vulnerable to technical failures.
In conclusion, due to technology improvements and required environment at work make people use gadgets to write or work. Additionally, the decline in manual writing is a negative development because of cognitive impact and technology reliance.
