Scientific research has long been associated with innovations that impact every aspect of our lives positively. However, the question of who should fund this research is open to debate, with governments seen as the primary investor rather than commercial entities. Even though this responsibility should be put primarily on the former, cooperation between both in funding the research should be encouraged.
One of the most critical arguments why the government should be the primary investor of scientific research lies in its objective. Government-funded research often focuses on public welfare, aiming at long-term gains although the potential for the immediate benefit is low. This type of research is carried out primarily to address the most pressing issues facing populations such as climate change, public health crises and energy shortages. With the main purpose being the betterment of humans, government agencies are found more responsible for allocating money to research. In addition, governments have a significant amount of resources at their own disposal that come through raising taxpayers’ money. This is another reason why scientific research should be invested by the government as far as it is in favor of the public good, demonstrating a right use of public budget.
That being said, it is essential for governments to cooperate with private sectors in conducting research. For instance, the successful cooperation between NASA, a government sector, and SpaceX, a private company can be a good case in point, with both attempting towards space exploration. Despite their objectives being slightly distinctive, they both are in the way of bringing innovations to society and making positive changes in people’s lives. The same can be said for commercial organizations like manufacturing conglomerates, pharmaceutical companies and technology giants that play different but important roles. Their interference in research may end up with positive results that can help improve different aspects of life. For example, pharmaceuticals directing money into creating drugs and treatments can offer their products at lower cost to the general public, helping those struggling financially take care of their health.
In conclusion, saying that either governments or commercial companies should be more accountable to fund scientific research is not sensible. Instead, encouraging both to work together is critical since their missions are to serve the society in various ways.
