The bar graph compares the number of kilometers, measured in billions (bn), travelled by passengers using five modes of transport in the UK in two separate years (1990 and 2000), along with the total kilometers travelled.
Overall, the changes in the distance travelled by all types of transport were minimal, resulting in a slight increase in the total distance covered. Increases were seen in air, bus, and rail, while the opposite was true for bicycle and motorbike. In spite of these shifts, bus and rail remained by far the most common modes of transport in the UK.
Delving into details, the distance travelled by bike, motorbike, and air was substantially lower in comparison to other modes of transport. In 1990, bicycles covered about 6 bn kilometers, whereas that of motorbikes was negligibly more, at roughly 7 bn kilometers. By 2000, both had dropped to approximately 5 bn kilometers. In contrast, air travel followed an upward trend, rising from around 4 bn kilometers to approximately 7 bn kilometers.
Bus and rail, in stark contrast, showed far greater numbers. The former covered around 47 bn kilometers, a figure that then saw an increase of just 1 bn kilometers. That latter ended at the same figure, though it started at 45 bn kilometers, slightly lower. As a result of these changes, the total distance covered increased from about 110 bn kilometers to 115 bn kilometers.
