The maps illustrate the changes to a coastal area known as Pentland between 1950 and 2007. Overall, the area underwent a dramatic transformation, evolving from an industrial site with vast grasslands into a modern town featuring enhanced residential, recreational, and commercial amenities.
In 1950, Pentland was divided into eastern and western sections by a main road leading directly to the coastline. On the eastern side of the road, a car park was situated, while the western side was dominated by factory buildings. Surrounding these structures, extensive areas of grassland occupied both the eastern and western parts of the area.
By 2007, the landscape had been significantly redeveloped. The factory buildings near the shoreline were removed and replaced with a park, a swimming pool, and a multi-story car park, all of which were interconnected. To the northeast, what had previously been an unused wasteland was developed into high-rise residential apartments.
Substantial changes also took place in the southern section of Pentland. Most prominently, side roads branching off the original main road were introduced, providing access to new facilities. Along the top of these side roads, a row of shops was constructed, while a cinema was built in the southwest corner of the area. Meanwhile, the southeast corner, previously undeveloped, was converted into a residential zone comprising rows of houses.
