Overall, private cars are a predominant means of transport in Edmonton, with buses and taxis being fairly unpopular. It is also clear that people mainly attribute their car use to work-related activities, particularly commuting to work compared to leisure which makes up a small percentage.
Private vehicles comprise 45% of the total transport use, which is followed by Light Rail Transit (LRT) at 35%. In contrast, buses and taxis are not as commonly used, with 10% of the journeys taken using each of these two types of transport.
Majority of the car users in Edmonton pointed to work-based activities as reasons for their use of private cars. Specifically, work commute was mentioned by more than half of the total survey participants at 55% compared to 45% presenting businesses activities as to why they use their cars.
The proportion of car use for personal reasons is relatively lower but giving a lift to their children to and from school was an exception with 40%. Shopping and leisure activities make up 15% each as a reason for car use.
