The line graph compares the volume of goods delivered by four transport systems in the United Kingdom between 1974 and 2002.
In general, three out of four transport categories, an upward trend was visible in the amounts of products transferred, while the volume of goods transported through railways remained unchanged, with some fluctuations during the years.
In 1974, most goods were transported through road among others, around 70 million tonnes, whereas almost the same amount of commodities were delivered by shipping and trains, standing around 40 million tonnes. In comparison, pipeline system contributed to only about 5 million tonnes of all the products transported in UK in 1974.
After reaching a low of approximately 65 million tonnes in 1982, commodity deliveries through roadways increased gradually, hitting a peak of almost 100 million tonnes in 2000. Similarly, the volume of goods transferred by ships on water experienced stable but modest growth from 1974 onwards. By 2000, the figure stood at just over 60 million tonnes.
The quantity of products transported by trains had shown 40 million tonnes by 2000, the same as in 1974. However, noticeable fluctuations took place during the period. Another notable increase occurred in the pipeline category, as the graph shows. Specifically, 20 million tonnes of products in the UK were transported through this mode in 2000.
