Beef was initially the most consumed type of meat, with consumption starting at about 225 grams per person per week in 1979. After a sharp decline over two years, the figure rebounded and peaked at more than 235 grams per person per week around 1982. Subsequently, despite a few fluctuations, there was a considerable decrease in beef consumption in the years leading up to 2004. Likewise, lamb consumption fell sharply from its peak of a slight excess of 150 grams per person per week in 1979 to approximately 60 grams per person per week, which was nearly equal to fish consumption in 1979, by the end of the period. Concerning fish consumption, it slid marginally over the period with a fall of around 15 grams per person per week.
In contrast, the amount of chicken consumed recorded a remarkable increase from just under the figure for lamb consumption at the very beginning to an estimated 250 grams per person per week in 2004, surpassing lamb consumption within a year and thoroughly overtaking beef consumption around 1989.
