The bar chart compares the proportion of people immigrating to Australia from five different countries from 1962 to 2002. In general, there is an upward trend in the share of immigrants from the UK, India, and Vietnam, while the reverse was true for the remaining nations. Moreover, the biggest change was seen in the percentage of people from Italy.
Focusing on the European nations, 40% of people from Italy moved to Australia in 1962, considerably higher than that of the UK at 10%. However, this disparity in immigration to Australia in the following years narrowed down, with the former seeing a dramatic decline to 15% and the latter one experiencing a minor change to about 12.5%.
With regard to Asian countries, India and Vietnam made up around 2.5% and 10% of the migration to Australia in 1962. And this was followed by significant increases to 15% and 25% in 1982, respectively. Despite the noticeable growths, the figure decreased slightly to 14% for the former, whereas that of the latter halved in the final year.
New Zealand, on the other hand, bucked the trend. In 1962, it accounted for about 13%, after which it fell gradually in the share of immigration to Australia, reaching just 5% in 2002.
