The tables compare the total amount of sales – Fairtrade*- labelled coffee and bananas – in the years 1999 and 2004 between five European countries.
Overall, Switzerland accounted for the highest shares of sales in terms of both categories, while the reverse was true for Sweden and Belgium, with the only exception of figures for Denmark, which observed a steady decline in the last year. Moreover, the most considerable changes occurred in the sales of coffee and bananas in Switzerland, UK, Belgium, Sweden, all showing upward trends in 2004.
Focusing on the largest figures, Switzerland and UK accounted for the highest shares of coffee and bananas sales. Switzerland earned huge amount of money by selling bananas, with 15 million and 47 million euros, while UK followed with 1,5 million and 20 million euros by selling coffee from 1999 and 2004.
There was, however, a noticeable discrepancy in the next two countries: Belgium and Sweden. Belgium witnessed a striking increase in its expenditure compared to Sweden, with 1, 0.6 million euros and 1.7, 4 million euros respectively, albeit Sweden showed some the same trends in 2014, with 1 million euros, and the total amount of sales – coffee and bananas – accounted for 0.8, 1.8 million euros and 1 million euros in turn.
In contrast, Denmark displayed a unique trend where the sale rates of bananas in 1999 exceeded in 2004, with figures of 2 million euros and 0.9 million euros respectively. Additionally, the figure for coffee experienced a slight growth with 0.2 million euros in the final year, from 1.8 million euros to 2 million euros, and gained the third place between all countries throughout the period.
